The Moscow Mule is one of the most popular cocktails in the world — and the ginger beer is doing most of the work. Vodka is structure. Lime is brightness. But the ginger beer is the flavor, the spice, the carbonation, the personality. This recipe gives you two ways to build it: with Top Hat Craft Ginger Beer straight from the can, or with any of our three Ginger Beer Syrup concentrates mixed with Top Hat Premium Club Soda or fresh sparkling water from your soda maker. Both versions include a zero-proof option.
The Moscow Mule is a built drink — no shaker, no strainer, no technique to master. Vodka, fresh lime, ginger beer, ice. The entire cocktail lives or dies on the quality of your ginger beer: the spice, the carbonation, the balance between sweet and heat. This recipe gives you two paths to the same destination — a can of our craft ginger beer made with cold-pressed ginger juice, or a ginger beer syrup concentrate you mix fresh with soda water. Both deliver real ginger bite. Both work spirited or zero-proof.
Method
- Add 1.5 oz Vodka and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice to a copper mug or Collins glass.
- Pack the mug completely with ice — crushed is traditional, large cubes work too. Fill it to the top.
- Pour 4–5 oz Top Hat Craft Ginger Beer slowly down the side of the mug (not directly onto the ice — this preserves carbonation).
- Give one gentle stir to integrate.
- Garnish with a lime wheel and a fresh mint sprig. Serve immediately.
Pro move: Pour the ginger beer last and down the side of the mug — this keeps the carbonation tight and lifts the ginger aroma into every sip. A 7.5oz can is the perfect size: 4-5 oz in the mule, the rest as a sip while you build.
Swap vodka for a zero-proof spirit alternative (Seedlip, Ritual Zero Proof, or similar) — or omit the spirit entirely and let the ginger beer carry the drink. The spice, carbonation, and lime brightness still deliver a full "cocktail" experience. A good ginger beer doesn't need alcohol to be a great drink. Under 80 calories with the can, under 10 with the sugar-free syrup build.
Top Hat Craft Ginger Beer (7.5oz can) is a finished ginger beer made with cold-pressed ginger juice, pressed lime juice, cane sugar, and apple cider vinegar. No preservatives. Ready to pour. This is the grab-and-go option — crack a can and build your mule in 30 seconds.
Top Hat Ginger Beer Syrups (32oz bottles) are concentrated ginger beer bases designed for mixing with soda water. They're a different formulation — built for customizable mixing. You choose the carbonation level, the sweetness, and the heat (Original, Extra Spicy, or Sugar Free). A 32oz bottle makes 30+ drinks. Perfect for SodaStream and soda maker owners, batch cocktails, or anyone who wants to dial in their mule exactly how they like it.

Try a different mule: Swap the vodka for bourbon and you've got a Kentucky Mule. Swap it for dark rum and it's a Dark & Stormy. Same ginger beer, same technique, different spirit.
